Resources for SICs on Health and Safety

The following is a collection of national and state-wide resources that may be useful to SICs that are developing initiatives involving family or student health and safety. We will be adding to this page as we identify additional resources.  Please let us know if there is a resource that you would like to see us add.

Publications:

SIC Activities Resource Library, Vol. V, Health and Wellness (PDF)
This volume describes activities related to family and student health and wellness undertaken by Riley Award honorees over the last 15 years.

Parent Engagement: Strategies for Involving Parents in School Health (PDF) 
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA: US Department of Health and Human Services; 2012. This is an excellent guide with lots of suggestions on how SICs can integrate family engagement strategies into their schools' health initiatives. It can also be requested from the CDC by emailing email@cdc.gov, or ordered by phone at 1-800-CDC-INFO.

Center for Ecoliteracy School Lunch Survey. This lesson plan, designed for students in grades 6-8, engages students in making their school lunches more healthful and less wasteful. Students use tools such as surveys and interviews to gather data and develop recommendations for change. The plan can be downloaded from the website listed above.

SC Farm to School Program, is housed on the SC Farm to Institution website, includes a number of resources for teachers including lesson plans for grades K-12 on nutrition and agriculture education. It also offers resources for school food service staff on topics such as how to conduct taste tests of healthy foods, health school recipes, and procuring locally grown produce.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation

The Alliance provides free, downloadable, evidence-based resources for schools, parents and community stakeholders to help create healthier learning environments. Its offerings include the 6 Step Process which provides a systematic approach for implementing and monitoring of state and federal school health requirements and the opportunity for schools to receive national recognition awards.

Children’s Trust of South Carolina is focused on the prevention of child abuse, neglect and injury. Its website contains a wealth of free information directed toward building strong families, keeping kids safe, and prevention learning. Federation of Families of SC

The Federation is a statewide non-profit organization that provides leadership in the area of children's mental health through education, awareness, support, and advocacy for families of children and youth with mental, emotional, and behavioral health challenges. It provides information and trainings as well as other services such as Youth MOVE SC, which helps youth ages 12-25 to connect for peer support.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program provides schools with grants that are used to provide students with a variety of free fresh produce throughout the school day. The program also encourages family education and community partnerships as ways to improve health throughout communities. Applications are available through the SCDE website.

MADD South Carolina

MADD is dedicated to protecting families from drunk driving, drugged driving, and underage drinking consequences. Available resources include informational materials and programs/presentations for parents and teens. National Alliance on Mental Illness, South Carolina Chapter

NAMI's mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals who live with mental illnesses and for their families by promoting the availability of effective services and resources, through education, support and advocacy. On the Wagon
On the Wagon is an easy-to-use rehab center locator with advanced level search filtering. If you live in South Carolina and would like to find out more about your options for drug treatment, On the Wagon is the first step to overcoming a substance abuse problem with a range of addiction treatment programs available. SC Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (SCCADVASA)

SCCADVASA is a statewide coalition of organizations providing intervention services to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and Primary Prevention programs to students and communities across the state. You can use the Coalition's website to find affiliated organizations in your area, many of which provide prevention services and education programs in their communities.

SC Safe Routes to School Program (SC Department of Transportation)

This program brings together parents, schools, and community leaders to encourage students, including those with disabilities, to walk and bike to school. SRTS activities and resources focus on improving walking and biking conditions around schools while building healthy habits and safety skills. Schools can apply for grants to fund a variety projects that support increased safety and convenience of children walking or biking to school.
