  You can help make
  a change.

  Help say goodbye
  to "minimally adequate".

Now South Carolinians can take action on behalf of our state public school system. By signing the petition, you can join other South Carolinians in support of inserting “a high quality education, allowing each student to reach his highest potential” into our state constitution.  This new language will replace South Carolina’s current state standard of “a minimally adequate education.”

Legislation to change the state constitution must be passed by a 2/3rds vote of the Senate and House of Representatives in order to put the amendment on the general election ballot for public vote in November, 2010.  CLICK HERE AND ADD YOUR NAME TO REACH THE GOAL OF 1,000,000 HISTORIC SIGNATURES THAT WILL CHANGE EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA!

The Mission:

  •   to diminish the incidence and impact of child sexual abuse, so that more children will grow up healthy and whole
  •   our programs will raise awareness of the prevalence and consequences of child sexual abuse by educating adults about the steps they can take to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to the reality of child sexual abuse

Darkness to Light's public awareness campaign seeks to raise awareness of the prevalence and consequences of child sexual abuse. Our ads are a "call to action" encouraging adults to call or go online for free materials that educate adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Darkness to Light is also actively educating adults through its newest initiative, Stewards of Children, a sexual abuse prevention training program that provides frontline training for organizations and corporations that serve children and youth.

In May of 2008, the SC Department of Education became the first in the nation to commit to a Statewide Adult Sexual Misconduct Prevention Initiative.  Their commitment to implement Stewards of Children will include the training of 86 Facilitators who will be responsible for training 40% of the first 10,000 instructional and instructional related staff – administrators, teachers, guidance counselors and other professional staff. The remaining 60% of will be trained online to ensure the immediate and successful training in each community while also factoring in available resources to reach our initial goal of training 20% of all educational staff between July 2008 and July 2009.

The Palmetto Horizon Foundation exists for the sole purpose of stimulating educational excellence in the state of South Carolina. It does this by acting as a catalyst and coordinator, bringing the resources of funds and the best minds to innovating an effective and valued system of education to the citizens of South Carolina.

The Palmetto Horizon foundation strengthens South Carolina's kids by harnessing the power of private charitable donations for K-12 public education statewide.

Since 1995, Palmetto Horizon has focused on hosting South Carolina’s nationally recognized Teacher of the Year program. In 2008, guided by the vision of state Superintendent of Education Jim Rex, the foundation dramatically expanded its role. Today, Palmetto Horizon serves as the main charitable vehicle for those wishing to improve the lives of the 700,000 children in South Carolina's public schools.
